The Mental Health League Table

The Mental Health League Table addresses critical questions regarding the availability and accessibility of mental health support at universities across the UK. 152 universities were included in this table. Rankings were based on the number of mental health supports available at the university in question, across the following range of services: counselling service, associated GP practice, mental health advisors or wellbeing officers (separate from the counselling or advice service), academic or individual tutors, Student Union advice centre which includes a focus on mental health and wellbeing, Silver Cloud subscription, Nightline, guaranteed residential support service, self-help materials published by the university, chaplaincy, peer mentoring schemes aimed at overall wellbeing rather than academic performance, and mental health workshops. Each institution was ranked according to how many of these services they provide to their students, giving a total possible score of 12 for each university.

The data was obtained by a google search of the university’s name and the service investigated, and/or a search of the university’s website and/ or student union website. This methodology was necessary due to the information often being spread across different sources. Nightline data was obtained through the Nightline search engine.

The 152 universities were relatively evenly dispersed, with many falling in the middle range of the table. Only one university, Exeter, achieved the maximum possible score of 12/12. However, 6 achieved 11/12 (Essex, Imperial College London, Keele, Leicester, Queen Mary, and York). A further 15 achieved 10/12. The lowest ranking universities were Arden University, and London Institute of Banking and Finance, which each scored only 1/12. Also low on the scale were the University College of Estate Management, and the Open University which each scored 2/12.

It should be noted that these ranking are based on the information about mental health support which is available on the websites of each university. The league table is a living document which will be updated over 3 months should new data arise. Furthermore, the rankings are based only on the services available, and do not consider factors such as student satisfaction, service quality, or effectiveness.
